Samawah Night January 7, 2008
Iraqi Ambassador H.E. Dr. Ghanim Al-Jumaily held a dinner party inviting former commanders of the Iraq humanitarian reconstruction and rehabilitation troops that deployed to Samawah, a city of Muthanna province in Iraq, from January 2004 to July 2006. During this period, JGSDF members provided humanitarian assistance to Iraqi people. Ambassador would like to renew his appreciation on behalf of Iraqi people and the government.
Former commanders of the 3rd, 4th, 5th, 8th, 9th contingents and the commanders of 1st, 3rd and 5th of the support units kindly attended the dinner party. H.E. Mr. Masahisa Sato was among them. He served as a commander of the 1st support unit and currently has been taking an active role as a member of the House of Councilors.
Since the dinner party was held totally in Iraqi style, we named it "Samawah Night". Ambassador gave guests traditional Iraqi clothes or Dishdasha as a token of appreciation. He said, "JGSDF left wonderful legacy in Iraq and they established friendship between Japan and Iraq. I hope that relations between Japan and Iraq will be more rewarding and the friendship will last forever".
The dinner was attended by Mr. Okuda, the Director General of Middle East Division at MOFA.
