Press release
January 25, 2008

The Embassy of the Republic of Iraq in Tokyo is pleased to announce the signing of eight projects totaling about 182.7 billion yen in yen loans, as part of the largest assistance package after that of the United States, to assist Iraq's reconstruction efforts.

The signing ceremony will be held on Friday, January 25, 2008 at the Japan Bank for International Cooperation (JBIC). The Iraqi Ambassador, H.E. Dr. Ghanim Al-Jumaily will sign on behalf of the Iraqi government and Mr. Kouji Tanami, the governor of JBIC will sign on behalf of the Japanese government.

The loan package is part of the roughly $3.5 billion in soft loans that Japan pledged to Iraq at the Madrid conference in 2003. The 182.7-billion-yen package will cover eight projects including the repair of the al-Musaib thermal power station in suburban Baghdad, Iraq's largest power-generation facility; the restoration of tanker mooring facilities off Basra, southern Iraq; and construction of roads and bridges in Samawah, where Japanese Self-Defense Forces troops used to be stationed to assist with reconstruction.

The Embassy of the Republic of Iraq in Tokyo takes this opportunity to express its gratitude, on behalf of the people of Iraq, to the Japanese people and the government for their continuous support of Iraq. It is our hope that these projects will help to build strong partnership between Iraq and Japan. Q and A session will be held after the ceremony.
